Day 1. DEPARTURE TO TUNISIA: Overnight flight through Europe.
Day 2. TUNIS-DJERBA: Arrival Djerba
and after a short break continue with a
walking tour through this city, established
3,000 years ago.
Day 3. DJERBA-MATMATA-DOUZ: Visit
the local pottery market, old city, the
harbor, Jewish Synagogue etc. Then travel
by coach to the Sahara. First visit
Matmata , the star of the Tunisian South.
This fabulous Berber village with its pitted
lunar landscapes was used by Spielberg in
the production of the movies 'Star Wars'
and 'Raiders of the Lost Arc'. Then to
the real Sahara. Leave your bus and begin
a 2 hour camel ride over the sand dunes.
Change your 4 x 4 camels to 4 x 4 Jeeps
which will bring you to the Sahara Camp.
Dinner around the camp fire . Overnight in
tents.
Day 4. DOUZ-TOZEUR: Leave the Oasis
and travel by 4 X 4, via Douz, on a
fascinating ride across the Chott El Djerid,
the largest salt flat in the world. Legend
has it that whole armies vanished forever
while crossing this lake. You will make a
stop to observe a natural phenomena
known as 'Stone Roses'. Arrive at the
Tozeour Oasis and your hotel.
Day 5. TOZEUR-TAMERZA-MIDES-CHEBIKA-TOZEUR: First to Matlaoui,
where the Red Lizard train awaits. Take a
fantastic one and a half hour excursion
through the amazing scenery of a mountain
oasis and Seldja. Also visit the oasis
Tebedit and Mides. Later continue with 4 x
4 vehicles to Temerza, an old Berber village
with waterfalls and pleasant palm groves.
Late return to Tozeur.
Day 6. TOZEUR-SBEITLA-EL JEM-HAMMAMET: Departure to Northern
Tunisia. First stop at nearby Sbeitla,
founded in 69 AD, with original Roman
temples, arches and streets. Then to El Jem
to visit the second largest and the best
preserved Colosseum in the world. The
movie 'Gladiator' was filmed here. Late
arrival Hammamet and your hotel.
Day 7. HAMMAMET: It is time to relax in
this lovely town. Swim in the
Mediterranean Sea or in your swimming
pool.
Day 8. HAMMAMET-CARTHAGE-SIDIBOU-SAID-TUNIS: Excursion to the
Tunisian capital and surrounding area.
First visit the ruins of Carthage, the former
capital built by Queen Dido and devastated
by General Scipio in revenge for
Hannibal's trek across the Alps. Also see
the remains of Carthaginian living quarters
on the Hill of Byres, Museum of Carthage,
and of Roman Carthage, the third largest
city in the Roman Empire. Visit Sidi Bo
Said, one of the prettiest Mediterranean
villages, a confection of domes, arched
doors, balconies and grilles in dazzling
blue and white. Then to Bardo Museum, a
palace complex with the world's largest
collection of Roman polychrome mosaics
from the 2nd century BC to the 7th century
AD. Later continue to explore Tunis,
including the El Attire Souk, Souk El
Kumach, a clothing market, Mirada
Medressa, Eze Zitouna Mosque, the
largest and holiest 9th century sanctuary in
Tunisia and Dar El Bey, the government
palace.
Day 9. DEPARTURE: Transfer to Tunis
airport for your return flight.
